Screen Printing vs. DTF – Which Is Better for Your Order?

Screen Printing vs. DTF

Which Is Better for Your Order?

If you’ve ordered custom apparel before, you’re probably familiar with traditional screen printing. But lately, you may be hearing more about DTF (Direct to Film). As DTF continues to grow in popularity, we want to break down both processes and help you understand which option may be the best fit for your next project.

Both methods produce excellent results — and each has strengths depending on your specific needs.

What Is Screen Printing?

Screen printing is the traditional method of decorating apparel. Ink is pushed through a mesh screen onto the garment, with one screen created for each color in the design. The ink is then cured to create a durable, long-lasting print.

Why customers love screen printing:

  • Extremely durable and long-lasting
  • Vibrant, bold colors
  • Soft feel on large runs
  • Most cost-effective for bulk orders
  • Ideal for simple, bold designs with limited colors

Best suited for:

  • Large quantity orders (36+)
  • Designs with solid colors

  • Event shirts
  • School and church groups

What Is DTF (Direct to Film)?

DTF is a newer digital printing method. Your design is printed onto a special film, coated with adhesive powder, and then heat pressed onto the garment. It allows for highly detailed artwork and unlimited colors without additional setup screens.

Why customers are excited about DTF:

  • No screen setup required
  • Unlimited color capability
  • Excellent detail and small text clarity
  • Great for short runs
  • Works well on cotton, polyester, and blends

Best suited for:

  • Small quantity orders (<36)
  • Highly detailed or photo-style designs
  • Multi-color artwork
  • Unique art placement
  • Quick-turn projects

So… Which Is Better? Screen Printing vs. DTF

The truth is, both are excellent options.

Screen printing continues to be the gold standard for bulk orders and bold, durable prints. It remains the most economical choice when quantities increase.

DTF is incredibly versatile and opens new possibilities for smaller runs and complex artwork without added setup costs.

As technology advances, you will begin seeing more DTF in the industry — and we are excited about what it allows us to offer our customers.

Our goal is always the same: recommend the best method for your artwork, quantity, budget, and timeline.
