“Preshrunk Cotton.”

Sounds reassuring, right? Like your shirt is completely safe from ever shrinking again.

Not exactly.

Let’s break down what preshrunk really means — and why proper care is just as important as quality printing or embroidery.

Common Misconceptions About “Preshrunk”

Let’s clear a few up:

  • Myth: Preshrunk means it won’t shrink at all.
  • Reality: It means shrinkage has been reduced — not eliminated.

  • Myth: Only 100% cotton shrinks.

  • Reality: Cotton shrinks the most, but blends (like cotton/poly) can still shrink slightly — especially if exposed to high heat.

A preshrunk shirt has gone through a pre-washing or preheating process during manufacturing to reduce the amount it will shrink after you buy it.

This helps stabilize the fabric before it ever reaches you.

Preshrunk does NOT mean zero shrinkage.
