Earth Day Edition: Let’s Rethink Sustainable Apparel

Let’s Rethink Sustainable Apparel
Earth Day feels like a good moment to revisit what we mean when we say “sustainable.”
Not long ago, sustainable apparel often meant one thing:
Premium shirts made from alternative fabrics like bamboo.
Today, the definition has evolved into something much broader — and much more meaningful.
The Misconception
There was a time when sustainability in our industry felt like a niche trend — organic cotton, recycled poly, premium price tag.
Now?
It’s no longer just about what a shirt is made of.
It’s about how it’s made, where it’s made, who made it, and what happens to it after it’s worn.
Sustainability isn’t a fabric.
It’s a system.
Let’s Define the Buzzwords
These are terms your customers — especially the next generation — are paying attention to:
Circular Fashion / Closed-Loop – Designing products so materials can be reused or recycled back into new garments instead of ending up in landfills.
Upcycled / Upcycling – Turning excess or discarded materials into new products of higher value.
Deadstock – Unused fabric or garments that would otherwise go to waste.
Zero Waste – Manufacturing practices that minimize or eliminate production waste.
Greenwashing – Marketing that makes a product appear more environmentally friendly than it actually is.
Traceability – The ability to track where materials come from and how products are produced.
Slow Fashion – Producing thoughtfully and intentionally — prioritizing quality, longevity, and ethics over speed and volume.

It’s Bigger Than Materials
True sustainability touches:
- Ethical sourcing
- Fair labor practices
- Responsible manufacturing
- Reduced environmental impact
- Quality that lasts
And here’s the part that matters most:
The next generation of buyers cares deeply about these things.
It’s no longer a trend.
It’s the expectation.
Quality Over Quantity
This year our theme has been simple:
Quality over quantity.
Sustainable merch isn’t about printing fewer shirts.
It’s about printing better shirts.
Ones people actually want to wear.
Ones that last.
Ones that represent your brand well.
Because the most sustainable product
— is the one that doesn’t get thrown away.
Our Commitment
Our recent move into our new building gave us the opportunity to elevate more than just square footage.
It gave us the opportunity to rethink our systems.
We improved:
- Working conditions
- Production organization
- Cleanliness and workflow
- Efficiency and quality control
But we didn’t stop there.
We implemented water recirculation systems in both our reclaiming and spray-out processes — saving thousands of gallons of water every single week.
We transitioned to more advanced ink systems that require less ink and generate less waste — while still achieving the same (or better) print results.
And when it comes to labor standards, we don’t just meet requirements — we aim to exceed them. Many of our customers require compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act. We believe in going beyond that baseline.
Because sustainability isn’t only about materials.
It’s about people.
Taking care of our team is a top priority. They are our greatest resource — and better-supported people create better work.
Better systems create better products.
Better environments create better outcomes.
Sustainability isn’t just external — it’s operational.
And that translates directly into a better end product for you.
This Earth Day, Ask Bigger Questions
Not just:
“What is this shirt made of?”
But:
How was it sourced?
Who made it?
How long will it last?
What does it say about our brand?
Merch done right = responsibility + quality + impact.
If you’re ready to build smarter, longer-lasting, more intentional merch programs — we’re ready to help.
